  4. Sep 12, 2012  Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 is simple and easy-to-use tool, that allows you to create unique movies and presentations made from photos, music and videos. The editor uses a new ribbon-style interface that is similar to that of Microsoft Office 2007 and later versions: It has large, easy to select menus on the top of the interface.
  5. Nov 04, 2010  With Microsoft Movie Maker 2011, the Windows Live team has done the seemingly impossible—they've made video editing simple, yet powerful enough to.
  • Pros

Simple interface for clip joining and trimming. Themes. Can rotate video. Easy upload to YouTube. Record movies with your webcam.
  • Cons

Some important files silently omitted from drive-image backups. Advanced options can be confusing. No voice-overs, chroma key, or picture-in-picture.
  • Bottom Line

For a free download, Windows 7 and Vista users get one of the easiest ways to make creative good-looking movies from their videos and digital photos, and a super-simple way to post them online.

With Microsoft Movie Maker 2011, the Windows Live team has done the seemingly impossible—they've made video editing simple, yet powerful enough to create fresh productions. From import to edit to output, the program is a snap, including one-step uploading to online video hosting services like YouTube. The team behind Movie Maker studied what users were doing with the software, and in the interest of simplifying, consciously cut features most people don't use. But the app isn't totally basic: You do get intros, lots of transitions, text overlays, and special effects. Just don't expect the fancy tricks like chroma-keying and picture-in-picture. For those, you'll have to spring for an app like our Editors' Choice Adobe Premier Elements 8 ($99, 4 stars).

Windows Live Movie Maker is pretty much it as far as free, easy-to-use Windows video editors go. Other free options like Wax and Zwei-Stein haven't been updated in years, and can't match Movie Maker's ease of use. YouTube's new YouTube video editor is free, but it offers nowhere near the power of Movie Maker, nor does another Google product, Picasa (free, 4 stars). Picasa is wonderful for photos, and more capable at video editing than its Web-based cousin YouTube, but it's still very limited compared to Movie Maker.

Since Apple's iMovie, a part of the Apple iLife '09 suite ($79, 4.5 stars), only runs on Macs and Movie Maker only runs on Windows, there's not much point comparing them (unless you plan to make your entire hardware platform choice based on the free included video editing software). I can say with confidence, though, that with this latest version of Movie Maker, Windows users needn't envy their Mac counterparts too much based on iMovie. And what's more, upgrades for Apple's software aren't free.

The new Windows Live Movie Maker features six AutoMovie themes that facilitate styling your movie. These offer canned intros, transitions, and effects, such as opting for black-and-white visuals instead of color. iMovie does offer more themes, and Movie Maker lacks a couple more of that app's tricks—video stabilization, picture-in-picture, chroma-keying, and voice-over recording. Actually, this last was a case where Microsoft found people weren't using the feature—which existed in earlier Movie Maker version—so took it out for simplicity's sake.

Also new in Movie Maker 2011 are webcam capture, full-screen preview, and network file support (more on this below). The program now lets you save video in high-definition 720p and 1080p formats, and upload directly to YouTube, Facebook, or Windows Live SkyDrive from within the application. A helpful resolution picker is presented before you start a YouTube upload.

Live

Ribbon Interface
Windows Live Movie Maker uses the Ribbon header that's become signature feature of Windows 7 apps, (as well as Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2010). The button choices change to show only relevant choices as you compose your movie. The main window has a large video preview area on the left, and a hybrid storyboard/timeline view to the left of your clips and photos that shows long thumbnails of each clip in its relative length. You can choose from five sizes and zoom the time scale in and out with a slider below, to suit the length of your movie.

I began the video creation process by clicking the clearly labeled 'Add Videos and Photos' button to open a file selection dialog (I could also drag the files directly from Windows Explorer into the editor). I was happy to note that this version lets you add media from network drives, ending a ridiculous restriction of previous versions. After adding my clips and pics, I found it easy to drag the clips and photos around to different positions in my production.

Windows

Basic video editing tasks, such as trimming and splitting, are very easy to perform. From the Edit menu, you can start the trim tool, which simply adds controls that let you set new beginning and end points for the movie. There's also Split, Set Start Point, and Set End Point buttons. If all this isn't enough, you can right-click at a point in your clip in the timeline to perform any of these actions from a context menu. From the home screen, I could add more content, titles, and captions, and even rotate a video I shot with the camera turned sideways. Note: You can only rotate a full clip, not just a section of it—as you can in Nero's Vision Xtra. Similar to Apple's iMovie, you can split a clip into two from any point in the middle—one workaround for rotating and applying effects to specific sections of a clip.

File Formats
I easily added a MOV file taken with my iPhone, and some high-definition MP4 videos from an AVCHD camcorder. Windows Live Movie Maker now supports M4V, WTV, MOV, AVCHD, MPEG-4, MT2, and 3GP. I could also add any common image file format, even RAW files for which my Windows 7 system had codecs.

Performance is another big factor in video editing—one of the most taxing activities on a computer. Windows Live Movie Maker was snappy in my testing on a midrange system, even when previewing an effect or adding or removing clips. It also uses graphics hardware acceleration to decode video clips by using the DirectX capabilities in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. This also means that Windows Live Movie Maker won't run on earlier versions of Windows.

Windows Live Movie Maker's AutoMovie feature automatically adds a title, credits, and transitions to photos and clips. If you want to add music you'll have to hunt for tunes, as the software doesn't include stock music the way Apple's iPhoto does. AutoMovie assembled my production in a flash. Unlike Roxio Creator, it kept my video clips' sound intact when I added background music. Budding sound editors can fade the audio track in and out, set the mix between the clips' original and the soundtrack, and even fit the movie to the music. Unfortunately, there is no way to record voiceovers, as you can in Apple's iMovie.

Animations, a hold-over from previous version of Windows Live Movie Maker, offers 77 clever transitions including diagonals, dissolves, patterns and shapes (such as the keyhole), reveals, shatters, sweeps, curls, wipes, and slide downs. One unique usability feature: When you choose one, it is immediately demonstrated on your currently selected clip.

There are only four artistic effects for clips: blur, pencil-drawing style, posterize, and threshold for an Andy Warhol-like color effect. Other effects let you add filters to black and white video to make certain colors 'pop' correctly, or add mirror views, warps, and pixilation, although you have limited control over these. One more simple but crucial effect is brightness adjustment, which you can apply to any number of selected clips.

You can add text in the form of titles, captions, and credits. Styles and animations for these are abundant, featuring effects such as fade in, fly in, stretch, and spin.

Performance Testing
Rendering my five-minute test movie (composed of various video and photo formats) to widescreen HD on a decent laptop (2.6-GHz Core 2 Duo with 3GB RAM) took 25 minutes. That's not too bad, but it should be noted that the movie didn't include a large number of effects. The video rendering process didn't have the added benefit of hardware acceleration, as that only kicks in during the decoding process, not encoding.

Publishing Your Movie
Once you're done tweaking your movie, you can use a one-click option to publish it to YouTube, burn it to DVD, or create files optimized for your HDTV, portable devices, or anything in between. The program can save only to the WMV file format, though you get a wide choice of resolutions in both standard-definition and HD. Windows Live Movie Maker will also create files specifically for the Zune and for Windows Phone handsets, but not for the Apple iPhone ($199, 4.5 stars) or Apple iPod touch ($299, 5 stars).

The DVD option takes you right from rendering the movie to Windows DVD Maker, saving you from having to figure out that last step. But the DVD burning process doesn't offer AVCHD (a format for recording and playing back HD video) as an output format, and you'll need third-party software like CyberLink Media Suite 8 Ultra ($129.95, 4 stars) to burn Blu-ray movies.

The Final Cut
Though it lacks some of iMovie's more-sophisticated effects, like green-screening, picture-in-picture, and voiceovers, Windows Live Movie Maker offers just as much (or more) in the way of transitions and text treatments as iMovie. And for ease of use, Microsoft's program can't be beat. For those who have no professional video-editing aspirations, but want to easily create attractive productions, Movie Maker gets two high thumbs ups. The only other free option worth mentioning is Picasa, whose video chops are far more restricted. Those looking to move up to more serious video tricks should get our midrange Editors' Choice, Adobe Premiere Elements 8. But for entry-level video editing in Windows, Windows Live Movie Maker is my Editors' Choice.
