SugarSync 2.0 Beta updated with new features, and design

Since we launched the SugarSync 2.0 Beta, we have been working hard on adding new features, and incorporating your feedback. Today, we have released a major update to the desktop application. If you are an existing beta user, your application should notify you of the upgrade in the next day or so when you start the app. You can also download the new version from here.

When we initially released the beta there were a few important things like tab design, device filter, and shared folder notifications that were still in progress. As you will see below, we’ve completed these projects, and also incorporated feedback from our beta users.

Updated Design: We wanted to make sure your folders are the first thing you see in the app, and the drop target is still easily accessible but not in your way. So, the drop target for syncing a folder, and sharing files and folders has been moved to the bottom of the Cloud, and Share tabs respectively.
Hide Mac Dock Icon: Mac users will have the ability to hide the dock icon by going to SugarSync Preferences. If you decide to hide the dock icon you can still access SugarSync from the menu bar icon.
Device Filter: We received a lot of feedback regarding the inability to see folders syncing to specific computers. You could do this using the ‘SugarSync Manage Folders’ dialog in the old app. With this update, you can now select any of your computers from the device filter to see a list of folders that are syncing with that computer. This will be especially useful if you sync many folders across different computers and you only want to see folders syncing to a specific computer.
Accept shared folders from within the Desktop app:With this new version you no longer have to rely on your email, or web app to receive a shared folder invitation. If someone shares a folder with you, you will see a notification in your SugarSync desktop app. You will also be able to accept or ignore the shared folder invitation from within the desktop app.
Right Click Context Menus: Key actions like syncing, sharing, contact management are a right click away.

Overlay icons on Virtual Drive: We are introducing file and folder overlay icons for SugarSync Drive. You will see a green checkmark icon for items that are locally synced to your computer, yellow syncing icon if they are currently being synced, and a people icon for shared items. If you are browsing the SugarSync Drive, you no longer have to go to the desktop app to understand which folder is synced, or shared. You have all the information right in SugarSync Drive.
Run app in background: To keep your data in sync, SugarSync starts automatically when you restart your computer. With this release SugarSync will silently run in the background instead of bringing the desktop app to the front when you restart your computer.
Download the latest update to SugarSync 2.0 Beta, and don’t hesitate to provide us your feedback. We are listening :)

  1. I wish that sugarsync watch recycle bin, that way if i delete a file from a folder synced using delete only delete key, the file go to recyle bin and also to sygarsync’s recycle bin. When i want to restore a file from recycle bin, sugarsyn should detect this file and compare it to its recycle bin and if the file is the same, then it should move it to the folder it was located.

When I use shift-delete key sugarsync the file is deleted permantently from windows, the same should do sugarsync, instead moving the file to sugarsync’s recycle bin, it should be deleted permanently too.

I hope you understand what I’m trying to tell.

    • Ricardo, I understand what you are saying. We are constantly evaluating feedback. We are adding some ‘Deleted Files’ functionality to the beta desktop app soon so that should help resolve some of this.

  2. Thank you for adding the “filter by computer” functionality. This is critical for multi-computer users and/or households where files are flying all over. Is there any reason you have chosen to not leave the same SugarSync Manage Folders functionality available in the new app (either in the desktop client or online)? It was very useful to be able to see which files were syncing where “at a glance”. Now, this must be done through trial and error and even then in the case of duplicate folder names on multiple computers such as “My Documents” it can be almost impossible to tell where the files might be ending up.

    Keep up the great work!

    • Brandon, Thanks for upgrading to beta. Appreciate the feedback!

You can right click on a folder name and add a tag to that folder. For example, your My Documents folder could have a tag of Home, or Work to distinguish your folders. What are your thoughts on using tags for distinguishing folders with the same name?

  3. This latest update is crashing almost constantly under OSX 10.6.8. It seems to happen if I eject the SugarSync drive (which I do not want to appear at all, ever).

    • Sean, Sorry to hear about the constant crashes. I’ve emailed the Customer Support team to get in touch with you. You should hear from them soon!

    —————

Tagging folders has been suggested by SS staff on a few website comments sections – as a response to people asking about managing devices & folders in the new Beta. eg Engadget

What happens to those users who have thousands of Folders? Are they supposed to Tag all their folders & Devices?

That is so inefficient & a waste of time.

With the old File Manager & Manage Sync pop-up – users didn’t have to do any of that. You could see everything in 1 screen. Much more efficient & user friendly – with less likelihood of user error.

Even with a search feature by device – the new Beta desktop still looks like a “phone app” with a series of lists on multiple screens. Very inefficient, requiring much more user interaction & much more likely to make a mistake.

The dumbed down functionality doesn’t show off why Sugarsync is a better service to use than Dropbox – with more sophisticated possibilities. (All the stuff the SS won awards for.)

Many of the current SS users have chosen SS precisely because it is such a great solution for syncing multiple devices, folders and files. That is what it used to be promoted as. Not some dumb single file/photo sharing toy app – where you can’t effectively manage more than 1 device & minimal folders & files.

I agree with Brandon. Please keep the old format!!!
(And yes – I have posted my comments on multiple websites, etc – because I would like to register my objection to the new Beta.)

  6. Hello!

I just downloaded the 2.0 beta. I use it on Mountain Lion and it works perfect. Great progress!!

But… The new SugarSync Mac App doesn’t support graphics for the Retina display on new MacBooks. On my screen the app looks quite blurry. Probably something to fix in your new update!

    Keep up the good work!

  7. Muito, mas muito lento no OSX. Horrível. Perdi um arquivo por alguma falha no controle de versão e quanto tento apagar qualquer coisa da pasta, demora mais de 15 minutos. Péssimo. Tive que parar de usar.

  8. I upgraded to the beta before, but quickly ended up downgrading again due to one feature — I could not find a way to permanently delete items from the Deleted Items in the old SS Manager — has this been adressed? When I contacted you guys before about this, I was told to use the website to do that, which is very much less efficient and slower compared to just using the app, thus why I downgraded.

    • Stay tuned. That feature is coming soon :)

  9. The beta so far has been great and I’m looking forward to 2.0’s release so I can truly roll it out company wide with our business account as my users had been previously intimidated by its setup… Now with the disk they will understand it better as former iDisk users… The one things I loved about SugarSync over Drop Box Was the fact that I could sync any folder I wished to the cloud without using a specialized folder so I didn’t duplicate data. Now when I put things into my Web Archive folder it appears it’s actually not just going to the cloud but using up space on my internal drive as well, I could see if it was still accessible while offline it was locally cached but that doesn’t seem to be the case, further more I believed the Web Archive folder to not be synced to any device so that it was not sync’d and taking up space?

    • Any data in web archive is only stored in the cloud, and should not be stored on your local hard drive. If that is happening it is a bug and you should contact support at: https://sugarsync.custhelp.com/app/ask

  10. Great, that was also the reason why I downgraded a month ago. Hoped to see that this issue had been added. Deleting files permantly through the web wasn’t a solution, as there seems to be no way to add a bunch of files, so I had to tick every file one by one.

  11. On the Sugarsync drive you HAVE to do something about multiple folder names. The top level of the drive MUST be the name of the device.

Having two folders called desktop, two called my documents, two called my music is simply a mess. It must look like windows explorer with the name of the machine as the top level of the drive.

  12. Hi,

I have just tried the new beta version of sugarsync and was very impressed, but I am not into social media or sharing photos etc. I mainly use the cloud for storing information both on the cloud and between computers.

My main gripe is that while I can add folders I cannot seem to find a way to delete both the Magic Briefcase or the Mobile photos folder from my files, is there a way I can do this, if not could this be added as I want to store only my folders and not ones created for me.

    I hope that makes sense.

  13. Thank you for this practical information ,Actually i’ll share it with friends and family because they are interested in this kind of information .

  14. I use windows 7 file view with extra large icons and I hate the large green check mark obstructing every picture in the file. I could understand seeing this check mark while I am viewing the sugar sync folder but I think it is outrageous to put that check mark on my pictures that have been synced while viewing in Windows Explorer. Please put the check mark on the folder and do not cover the face of the picture. Please fix this.

  15. i have been using sugersync from a long time.just updated to beta few days back.all previous versions are stable. but unfortunately this version of beta crashes every time i start my windows 8. plz look into the matter soon.and 2nd thing is plz release a app for window phone.

    • Please contact SugarSync Customer Support at https://sugarsync.custhelp.com/app/ask. They can help you with the crash. Windows Phone app is going to be launched this month.

  16. My sugar beta shows 70% full and I can’t figure out how to delete it. I don’t see any files in my sugar to delete.

    • If you go to Sugarsync/File menu, you will see ‘View Deleted Items’. From there you can delete all files or selected files and you can then reclaims the storage space.

  17. This apps very nice, thanks for shared

  18. The green ticks over the synced files have disappeared and I cannot get them back. Please help!!!!!!!
I cannot find the way to sync files to my iphone so that I can have the information when no internet access is available.

  19. The green check mark icons disappeared in my sugarsync folder too. Why is that and how do I get them back?
